About Mia Miyoung Kim
Mia Miyoung Kim earned both her BFA and MFA in Jewelry and Metal Arts from Hongik University in Seoul. She later studied printmaking at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto and received a second MFA in Jewelry and Metal Arts from the California College of the Arts in San Francisco. After returning to Korea, she taught at Jangan University in Suwon for five years as an adjunct professor. She then relocated to Canada, completed a diploma in Computer Graphics at the International Academy of Design in Toronto, and moved to the United States in 1999.
For over twenty years, Kim has directed MK Gallery and Jeweler’s Gallery in the DMV area (Washington, D.C., Virginia, and Maryland), where she curated international exhibitions and consistently introduced contemporary artists from Korea, the United States, and beyond.
Alongside her curatorial work, Kim has continuously developed her jewelry practice and, in recent years, has expanded into painting. Grounded in minimalism, her work reflects everyday emotions and the passage of time, emphasizing subtle balance and the use of space within simplified forms. Her practice moves fluidly across materials and scales, resisting fixed genres.
In her painting practice, Kim explores a more intuitive and introspective emotional flow. Painting serves as a space for reflection and record, offering a different way to engage with daily moments, memory, and personal narrative. While jewelry and painting operate through distinct languages, they are closely connected within her practice, forming a cohesive and integrated body of work.
김미영(Mia Miyoung Kim)은 홍익대학교에서 주얼리와 금속공예로 BFA와 MFA를 취득하였다. 이후 캐나다 토론토의 Ontario college of Art에서 판화를, 미국 샌프란시스코의 California Colleage of Arts에서 주얼리와 금속예술로 두 번째 MFA를 취득하였다. 귀국 후 수원의 장안대학교 귀금속 디자인학과에서 겸임교수로 재직하며 5년간 강의를 하였고 이후 캐나다로 이주하였다. 토론토의 International Academy of Design에서 컴퓨터 그래픽 디프로마 과정을 마친뒤, 1999년 미국으로 이주하였다.
김미영은 워싱턴 D.C. 버지니아, 메릴랜드를 포함한 DMV지역에서 20년 이상 MK 갤러리와 주얼러스갤러리를 운영하며 국제 전시를 기획해왔으며, 한국과 미국을 비롯한 동시대 미술 작가들을 꾸준히 소개해 왔다.
또한 작가로서 꾸준히 주얼리 작업을 지속해 왔으며, 최근에는 회화 작업도 병행하고 있다. 그녀의 작업은 미니멀리즘을 기반으로 일상의 감정과 시간을 담아내며, 단순한 형태 속에 섬세한 균형과 여백을 중요하게 다룬다. 다양한 재료와 스케일을 넘나들며 특정 장르에 고정되지 않는 태도는 그녀의 작업 전반을 관통하는 특징이다.
회화 작업에서는 보다 직관적이고 내밀한 감정의 흐름을 탐구한다. 회화는 그녀에게 기록이자 사유의 공간으로, 주얼리와는 다른 방식으로 일상의 순간과 기억, 개인적인 서사를 담아낸다. 두 매체는 서로 다른 언어를 사용하지만, 그녀의 작업 안에서 자연스럽게 연결되어 하나의 세계를 이룬다.
