About Mia Miyoung Kim
Mia Miyoung Kim is a jewelry artist and curator. She earned both her BFA and MFA in Jewelry and Metal Arts from Hongik University in Seoul. She also earned a second MFA with Distinction in Jewelry and Metal Arts from the California College of the Arts in San Francisco, and studied printmaking at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto.
After returning to Korea, she taught Jewelry at Jangan University in Suwon for five years as an adjunct professor. She then relocated to Canada, completed a diploma in Computer Graphics at the International Academy of Design in Toronto, and moved to the United States in 1999.
For over 20 years, Kim has directed MK Gallery and the Jeweler’s Gallery in the DMV area (Washington, D.C., Virginia, and Maryland), curating international exhibitions and introducing contemporary artists from Korea, the United States, and beyond.
Alongside her curatorial work, she has continuously developed her jewelry practice and, in recent years, expanded into painting. Her work is grounded in minimalism, reflecting everyday emotions and the passage of time while emphasizing subtle balance and the use of space. Within simplified forms, she moves freely, exploring an intuitive and introspective emotional flow and reflecting on and recording daily moments, memory, and personal narrative. Jewelry and painting operate through distinct languages, yet within her practice they remain closely connected, forming a cohesive and integrated body of work.
김 미영은 주얼리 아티스트이며 큐레이터이다. 그녀는 홍익대학교에서 주얼리와 금속예술 전공으로 BFA와 MFA를 취득하였으며, 이후 미국 캘리포니아 예술대학에서 두 번째 MFA를 우수한 성적으로 취득하고, 캐나다 토론토 온타리오 예술대학에서 판화를 공부했다.
한국으로 돌아온 후, 수원 장안대학교에서 5년간 주얼리 전공 겸임교수로 재직하였고, 이후 캐나다로 이주하여 토론토 국제 디자인 아카데미에서 컴퓨터 그래픽 디플로마를 마친 뒤 1999년 미국으로 이주하였다.
지난 20여 년간 김 미영은 워싱턴 D.C. 지역에서 MK 갤러리와 주얼러스 갤러리를 운영하며 국제 전시를 큐레이션하고, 한국과 미국을 비롯한 다양한 국가의 현대 작가들을 소개해 왔다.
그녀는 큐레이터로서의 활동과 병행하여 주얼리 작업을 꾸준히 발전시켜 왔으며, 최근에는 회화 영역으로 작업을 확장하고 있다. 그녀의 작업은 미니멀리즘에 기반을 두고 있으며, 일상 속의 감정과 시간의 흐름을 반영한다. 절제된 형식 안에서 미묘한 균형과 공간의 여백을 중시하며, 직관적이고 내면적인 흐름을 따라 일상의 순간과 기억, 그리고 개인적 서사를 성찰하고 기록한다. 주얼리와 회화는 서로 다른 언어로 작동하지만, 그녀의 작업 안에서는 긴밀하게 연결되어 하나의 통합된 작업 세계를 형성한다.
